standards

Below are the different standards learned in EDTEC. Click on a standard to see the artifact that best represents that standard.

Data-based decision-making

Value the use of data as the starting point for professional work.

San Diego History Center Survey Analysis (10MB PDF) ED 795. The San Diego History Center wanted to attract more K12 students to their facilities on school field trips. My partner and I invited teachers from the San Diego Unified School District to participate in an online survey designed to understand how field trips are selected. This report analyzed the data from the survey and provided recommendations to the San Diego History Center.

Technical

Use software and other tools appropriate to the task.

Build a Checkers Set in Second Life Simulation (11MB SWF) EDTEC 670. Second Life, the virtual reality environment, provides tools for building virtual artifacts in its virtual world. This simulation shows how to use those tools to build a checkers set that can be used to play a game of checkers in Second Life.

Cognitive

Analyze, synthesize, use inductive and deductive reasoning, solve problems effectively and creatively.

Tie a Bowline Job Aid (0.5MB PDF) EDTEC 540. The bowline is a knot that Boy Scouts are supposed to be able to tie, but the Scouts in my troop frequently have trouble remembering how. This job aid is the result of working with the Scouts to understand what I could provide to help them remember.

Communication

Communicate clearly to achieve professional goals using visual and verbal modes to explain and persuade.

Map Your Diatonic Harmonica with an Instrument Tuner Lesson (7MB PPTX) EDTEC 671. The intent of this lesson was to teach a harmonica player how to map out the notes on their standard, key of C, diatonic harmonica. I used narrated Microsoft PowerPoint slides with graphics to explain how.

Interpersonal

Interact effectively with others as peers, subordinates and leaders to accomplish goals.

ESL LMS for Korean-Americans Work Plan (79KB PDF) EDTEC 572. This work plan shows how our team divided up the tasks to create an LMS to teach English to Korean-Americans.  The LMS contained 3 courses based on everyday experiences. Each of us was responsible for one of the courses, but many of the tasks overlapped.

Principles, theories, and models

Understand many theories and models, choose from among them appropriately, and apply them effectively.

Cognitive Load Balancing and Shedding Article (HTML page with SWFs) EDTEC 541. This is an article I wrote for the Encyclopedia of Educational Technology. It begins by briefly explaining some of the concepts of Cognitive Load Theory, including working memory. It then outlines the five types of working memory overload and the nine methods proposed by Mayer and Moreno to reduce the overloads.

Processes

Understand processes such as change, design, development, and learning.

Internal Networking Certification Proposal (0.5MB PDF) EDTEC 685. I wrote this proposal for the Director of Networking and Hardware Service at Symitar. His networking technicians spend so much time in the field, that they have trouble keeping up with the latest developments in their field. This paper proposes an internal Networking Certification process.

Systems

Understand that we live and work within systems of cause and effect in which actions may have multiple origins and consequences.

Curriculum for Collaboration Timeline (158KB PDF) EDTEC 684. I was part of a team tasked with writing a plan to implementing a complex system of conferences and synchronous and asynchronous online instruction and instructional materials. In this timeline, we scheduled the tasks with predecessor relationships to ensure that everything came together at the right time.
